I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best programmers in Radio, here in the States and also in Europe and Asia.
While each has a distinct style and personality, I started thinking about the traits that they share while I was on a long flight and I’ve identified five which are worth emulating:
- The best PDs are usually the first ones to tell you what you do best and have concrete examples of you getting it right. They get you focused on your strengths and publicly acknowledge your success.
- They also never shy away from telling you when — and why — you missed the mark, and how you can do better. Having said that, they hold a deep respect for how tough an air talent’s job truly is.
- The very best not only teach you how to be successful at work, they are models when it comes to life lessons too.
- They find a way, despite their crazy schedules, to give you time when you need it. In fact, they seem to always know when you need a little extra care and yet never make you feel needy.
- They are natural motivators. The last thing you want to do is disappoint them.
Chances are you’re still in touch with the best PD you worked for. Those working relationships lead to longer-lasting personal relationships too.
So now, it’s time for you to pay it forward. Share some of the lessons you’ve learned. Find someone you can mentor. Give back as much as you were given.
That’s another lesson I learned along the way from the best PD’s in the world.
