In Praise Of The Good Folks

Off in a second for Grammy week in Los Angeles, but before getting on the plane I thought I'd take a minute to acknowledge that it's been a week of good folks doing good things around Music City. In no special order, here's a few salutes:
Louise Scruggs: Wife, mom, and the first female booking agent/manager in Music City history. She was Earl's wife, and Gary, Randy and Steve's mom. She was 78 and had a great, important life! Billy Currington: Hopefully he will stay sane as his star rockets forward. He's got a great song and recent #1, Must Be Doing Something Right. He came to town in 1992, so his long wait and patience have paid off. Chely Wright: Got over $25,000 in musical instruments donated to schools in Gulf Coast Mississippi affected by Katrina. That's a great charity for a concerned country singer to be supporting. Brad Paisley: How can he not get a CMA Song of the Year nom for "When I Get Where I'm Going"? Watching the video and really listening to the song this week made me cry. I'm the first to say it takes a lot to do that. Brilliant production and, most of all, REAL. Carrie Underwood: Doing everything right! May she continue on being a sweet famous person unlike some of her sister Music Row gals who have gone spoiled and become Diana Ross-like divas!I think that's it for the attaboys and attagirls, so I'll segue to Super Bowl and Grammy week. Super Bowl seems yawningly bad. Anyone else dulled to death by it this year?
Grammy's are always 30 minutes of real good followed by 2 ½ hours of ugh. McCartney will be good. The Sly and the Family Stone salute will be fun. Keith and Faith should have good chemistry. Sugarland and whatever they do will be interesting to see. The exiled member issued a statement this week. Basically, she used the Brian Wilson defense, arguing that the road and group were screwing up her songwriting. I'm sorry, but what's the real story? Pushed or jumped? I think she jumped. But, bad timing and the whole situation sounds like a mess for all involved.
No Okies in the Nashville Star? How did that happen?
Good for Josh Turner and his number one CD. Big voiced, low-key guy with a great song and video. Glad something as stone cold country as that can make it.
And how about the Chicks coming out of the witness protection program and talking this week in Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone. Natalie's comment were met with a yawn. Not sure anyone really cares what they do.
Great musicians and their fans will love them no matter what. Those on the other side are going to stay on the other side. The question is, how will it all ring out at the cash register? Can they make it without the help of Country Radio. I say YES. It would be nice to have everyone make nice, but Natalie makes that difficult if not impossible. Hard to help that situation and make peace when Natalie takes a sore subject then adds to it by saying the stereotypes in Country Music are true. Shut up and sing.
