The Kenny Chesney stadium show was amazing! I have seen The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson in similar venues and this was on par. He's a Kansas City in that New York league but he's every bit in the majors.
The Kenny fans, all 47,699 of them, are really into this guy and his music. It was as much a sing-a-long as it was a party. The production was first class. It was fun watching the girls (and it was mostly girls) swing and sway and sing. Garth Brooks did it bigger and maybe better but I can't think of anyone since who had that Garth voo-doo going. You have to see it to understand. I saw it and the vibe was impressive.
If ANYONE else thinks they are Entertainer of the Year right now, just have them march on down to a Chesney stadium show. Rascal Flatts is doing a great job and they may soon reach this plateau and the same goes for Keith Urban but right now, in this day and time Kenny is the guy!
I know there are people who think I am a Kool Aid drinker but you haven't been to the Kool Aid stand. It is a very long 6 and half hour party with no let down in the closing act.
So besides Kenny the top acts in Country music are rolling right along. The top ten are hot and the next ten well it's a nice drop off. No I am not going to list the drop off right now. The top 10 acts are pretty obvious especially the top five or six. That's great.
The folks on the horizon for sure include Little Big Town. They are an interesting blend. They will be interesting to watch. The marriage thing for two in the band to each other was a nice headline. Bands are tough to hold together on a good day. The music they do is good. Very good.
Summer is slow and this Summer is HOT. The music business for cd's stinks. Sales are cold but the concert business is rolling right along for the big acts.
Musically, am I the only one who thinks the music right now is boring???? Pop and country! When is the last time ANYONE had a song you could hummmmmm. Weird times.
Someone was talking about radio the other day. A lot of management today apparently never listened to the radio as a kid anyway. They have no idea why anyone listens in the first place. You can't talk to morons like that but I will attempt to right now ... one more time ... school is in session:
Radio works best when it serves the role of your companion. Better than a dog but it still cant talk to you. It's there when you need it like the Fire Department. It comforts you if and when you get scared. It tells you what's going on like the newspaper but faster and more immediate. It plays your favorite song. It gives you something to talk about. Did you hear so and so say that?
When a radio station stops doing the above it becomes less useful. An IPOD, a cd player lots of things can play a song. It isn't JUST about playing a song. Truthfully this crazy jukebox thing happened when consolidation and greed had stations playing 20 minutes of commercials an hour. You there for didn't talk more to add to the TALK. You just let the music flow. It created a jukebox that plays commercials. Who wants that? Ultimately as the years go by maybe a whole generation coming up will not want it. But who cares about that the greedy bastards running this ship into the ground will be gone but so will this business.
I feel better now.
Just do YOUR job. Someone will figure out how to fill this void that has been created and will NOT be filled by an IPOD. TV is doing that to some degree in the Morning drive slots. TV is growing in then morning but is radio??
It's hard to screw up something that cultural of a fixture as interactive radio but the brain surgeon group think people who give local stations ZERO money to work with has done just that.
I didn't really intend to get off on this subject but it is always the 3 ton gorilla in the room that no one wants to recognize.
Talk radio is the closest thing today to getting it right. If only Music based radio could incorporate some of that energy and audience participation. THINK!
