... reporting from Los Angeles.
It's been a star-packed week, beginning with a great performance in Birmingham by Brad Paisley. His new fall tour is nothing short of impressive. We all know Brad is a good guy, can play the guitar like Jimmy Page and makes fun music. What I didn't know is what an entertaining show he has put together.
Brad uses video on stage like all the big acts, but his videos help tell the story or add something more than just distraction or dessert. The screen is some special hi-def thing, and all the songs he uses it with make everything just that much better. It's smart and funny and just plain good!
Opener Carrie Underwood is growing as a star every night. She has added some production value as she ramps up for her not-too-long-in-the-future headlining status.
Brad just blew me away, and backstage it's the most laid-back, non-pretentious atmosphere too. Blaine Larsen was on the show I saw too, and this young man is also one to watch. Excellent show, so see it when it comes around this fall. You will not be disappointed.
Why are the so-called Country TV networks ignoring Farm Aid?
Kenny Chesney was out this week for a 25-million-sold party. He seems to be press-confident again after all that Renee business. Kenny looked happy and was humbled by all that's happened to him. He MUST be Entertainer of the Year. The race should not even be close.
Met Kellie Pickler of "American Idol" fame this week. She seems sweet and ready for her press spotlight in October as she introduces her new music from BNA. My fingers are crossed. Once she gets her confidence, she should be somebody who's a lot of fun.
Wynonna was around this week too. We did NOT talk about the "Nashville Star" job; it just never came up. The next day we learned Jewel is the new host. I'm working on that tonight in L.A., when the "Nashville Star" show hits the House of Blues and I'll be there.
Wynonna is such a joy to just be in the room with. She is generous, fun and kind. I always like talking to her. She's smart and well spoken, and, while I am doling out the compliments, she is one of the best singers in ANY business. I'd put Wy in a sing-off with anyone! But her Christmas CD -- it is strong. And I hear Brad Paisley's is good too.
Wy, Kenny, Alan, Rascal Flatts and Barbara Mandrell in the last few days. Barbara remains the classiest person. Sent me a handwritten thank-you card. A lost art of elegance. She is the best.
Tim McGraw ahead in two weeks in Hollywood to talk about the new film. That should be interesting. His new video is out now, "My Little Girl." And the new Keith Urban video is good, real good.
