Jimmy Carter in his homebase Nashville.
Killer quakes at the beach, self-destruction and intrigue at NBC, a governor calls Country Crossing folks "Criminal Thugs!" We are only two weeks in to the new decade! All in two weeks!
The NBC thing for all broadcasters is one of the best soap operas ever! What a mess started and operated by certified idiots! Group-think ... Radio people sure know about this; TV people do now, too!
Who wins in the NBC disaster? Leno is, for sure, damaged goods ... Conan's real damaged goods. Jimmy Fallon might end up the big winner with a better time period and I like what he's doing ... Jimmy Kimmel is very good, too...I feel sorry for Conan! I don't like his on-air persona, but feel sorry for him as a person going through this crap.
Not sure how all this works out for Music Row, but I think good. Leno remains a fan of many Nashville stars. Letterman will continue to improve on that front. So for Nashville, Conan out is a win ... but still don't like the way it was done ... yuk.
The Haiti disaster is and will be exhausting. It's on the scale of the biggest ever and it's on our backdoor.
In a time of scared money, people will open their pocketbooks. It will affect other charity giving. Still, this hurt is large and the need is equally large. Like Katrina, this will go on for a long time ... months ... years even. In our attention-deficit-syndrome society, will we be able to involve this story to some type of good conclusion?
Two weeks into the new year and we have FROZENNNNNNNN ... Coldest temp in north Florida in 100 years. With this weather that is now almost warm by comparison. Radio has and is being challenged to step up with weather coverage -- even with short staffs.
The music business is still downsizing. UMG this week. Where is this going? Even saw a column that may rightfully suggest the name Country going away as a brand. Too many hillbilly references ... It could happen!
And "Idol"... Pants on the Ground. Wow ... have you in recent years heard a tune that so many people played as fast as they could? If the song is good and you get it to the people, they WILL respond. It was exciting to watch the Internet light up ... cool ... General what's-your-name from Atlanta ... great job!
