Jimmy Carter in Las Vegas
I never quite understood it, but I saw it ... Garth Brooks and all the hoopla over the years. Never really understood the madness around Elvis, though, like Garth, loved the music and the shows were magical. Beatles the same thing ... All three magic ... game-changers in front of and behind the scenes...
Garth is back ... Garth should be played more on the radio. He was THE '90s, yes, but he still sounds good and can run rings around most of the competition in almost any category. He is as thin, happy and as ready to go as I have ever seen him. He is game-ready. Brett Favre kicks all those 25-year-olds. Mark Martin in NASCAR sure seems to be wearing out the 20-year-olds, too. Trisha and Faith are two of the best singers ever in Country. Are they getting the proper attention?
The point basically: Taylor Swift is great ... she's a game-changer using the Internet. She is winning and doing everything -- BUT she is not the end-all and be-all. Garth is back and there is room for it all.
When Garth pushes, Country music benefits. He can do a show with just his guitar. So can Vince, so can Brad, so can Keith. Taylor can, too. It is a real talent to go out there with just your axe!
I'm writing all this because some of the people flying radio are DUI. Simple as that. They are going down a dead end. The accountants are making programming decisions created by accounting-making decisions in the first place.
The public has wider tastes and styles and desires than they are given credit for. All this narrowcasting seems weird. The songs are moving too fast and burning out too fast. The format needs to be exciting ... It was this week!
Hometown ownership I predict will come back. In the meantime...
Brad gave away a truck to the millionth ticket buyer, Taylor is hosting SNL 11/7, Garth got the front page for signing a Vegas deal. It was a good week. The game-changers are getting attention. The spotlight is large.
Look at who is making all the news ... family-oriented, smart, talented stars. People with passion doing things they are excited about.
Radio needs to match the urgency and passion of the artists. The crowd loved LBT, Keith, Brad and so many others at All For The Hall. The crowd went crazy over surf music superstar Dick Dale at the Musician's Hall of Fame induction. It was exciting to see the standing ovation for Garth in Vegas last night.
Let's make radio that sounds exciting with more than card readers and the same 20 songs over and over again. Just do good radio. Give your audiences some to talk about and have fun with.
