Not Just A Girl … Absolutely

Homework assignment: Watch on Netflix the Shania Twain documentary, “Not Just A Girl.” Must see TV for jurors sitting in the “who goes next” meeting for the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame waited way too long to put Ray Charles in. The same could be said for Kenny Rogers and Charlie Daniels. The Judds were a few years too late as well.
Putting Garth Brooks into the Hall of Fame was a real no brainer. Same can be said for Reba McEntire and Alan Jackson. Why wait in their cases? They became eligible and they got in.
Back to Shania, and cutting to the chase, vote Shania Twain into the Hall of Fame NOW!
The stats, her influence, she was every bit the flip side of the Garth Brooks coin. Shania was shaking it up on the female side while Garth was rewriting the record books for the men.
Shania was a game changer. Set aside the fact that her Canadian roots and style were paving a new path. Yes, the sex appeal too had rarely been pushed. Same for her landmark music videos. Shania was from a small mining town in Canada, and she lived a rural country lifestyle until she slipped into the big city and cast her spell.
One of the strongest women who has survived every kind of hardship and bounced back, Twain is a role model, and so many of today’s Country women have benefited from the bridges Shania knocked down.
Yes, her husband put a hot music bed under her songs, but as we have seen over the years, all that rumor was just that. Shania CAN sing! Go to YouTube and watch her sing “Endless Love” with Lionel Richie!
Look at her Vegas show, or even her touring show. Look at the songs she co-wrote. Look at the arc of her career. She was a trailblazer!
Put Shania Twain in the hall of fame ASAP. Watch the Netflix documentary and tell me I’m wrong. Country music has a very wide style range. Big tent. Shania put powerful videos with her impactful lyrics and cutting edge score. Don’t do a Ray Charles and make her wait. She deserves to be in that rotunda. That Netflix documentary can serve as a resume for the file.
Another female legend, Hall of Famer Barbara Mandrell, was honored at the Grand Ole Opry recently for 50 years of membership. She was always a great ambassador for Country music. She was the whole package. Glad that Carrie Underwood chose to be up front when Barbara was honored. Carrie does a lot of the same things Barbara did.
The powerful women of Country music … I scream whenever I hear otherwise. The breakthrough women have all been so striking. Yes, re-school yourself on the career of Bobbie Gentry. She has been discussed for HOF membership. She was a very big deal for almost 10 years.
Someday the HOF secret committee will have to discuss Taylor Swift. She’s a lock in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Started out in Country then conquered the world.
Someday, but not too far away.
Shania goes in next! Who holds up to those credentials, or even comes close?
