On the eve of CRS, The Super Bowl and Groundhog Day.
Phil saw his shadow and more than a few CRS attendees will see there's if they pull an all-nighter at several of the secret and not-so-secret events CRS week.
As the labels ramp up for the schmoozing, take a look at the Top 20 Country songs. A very eclectic winter crop of tunes. Is it me or is this the most romantic/lovestruck bunch of hits in a long time?
The "party on the pickup truck down by the creek" songs seem to be in a rest mode. The party songs in general must be holding off until warmer months. Lots of love out there if you stop and look. And yes, some broken hearts songs, too.
Did something change or is it the luck of the draw? The hit-bound songs were stuck in one groove for a long time, so now where is this train going? Heard for a long time that Brothers Osbornes' sound was more the direction some wanted the music to head off in.
The Grammys were a mess. On every level of who performed and what they performed. It was not a great or even good night for Country with most "A" list artists in the witness protection program Grammy night.
On the positive side, it was a great night for Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton. Stapleton with his multiple wins, but Maren for her singing!
The Target commercial (if that's what you call it) was the best song of the night! Maren could sing the phone book and make it sound great. If she was a stranger before Grammy night to some, she isn't now! She shined in the group-sing for the Las Vegas shooting victims, but that song was probably not the right song for the singing talents involved. Just not in the vocal range of anyone but Maren. Strains and struggles to sing it with great motivation, but would have been cut by Simon on American Idol.
The head of the Grammys might lose his head over a statement taken out on context. The reaction was received about as well as the famous women and "Tomatoes" in the salad comment a few years back.
The ladies are in a war footing these days for plenty of reasons in all musical genres. The #metoo issues ... Getting their songs to award levels, getting them played on the radio in general. (Just look at Country Top 25, you have Kelsea and who else?)
In the pop world, the women are not getting festival headline slots. It's a difficult time for the extremely talented in the Country format. The musical programming geniuses are slow walking or simply ignoring more than a few artists these days. They have their favorites and if you are one of those, these are happy days!
So Carrie's husband as had it with retirement; she got pulled over by the Brentwood cops. Our Mayor is stuck in a sex scandal. And the groundhog says six more weeks of winter.
If anyone reading this loved the Grammy show, God bless you. Too much of one kind of music. It didn't even attempt to show off the wide range of greatness in the music world. The show has no place for skits; it is not Saturday Night Live. Why was U2 on a barge? It was a very bad, tried too hard, effort. Maybe a housecleaning on the production side is in order. It would be hard to be worse. Get the format from pick a year and copy that.
Mix up the old and new. Introduce Jazz and classical in a way young people will like it. I want my three-and-a-half hours back!
