Wow! 13.8 million viewers for a late-night TV show ....biggest audience for the show since 1994. Bigger audience than any show that day on network television!
Dave went out with a bang! The way anyone would want to go out total audience was one million smaller than Leno's goodbye ... ouch!) STILL ... it was the most talked-about TV event in some time.
With the baby boomers getting older the media is changing. Record companies are changing ... radio is changing ... or panicking, in many cases, for all the above.
The economy is simply not right. Hasn't been right. Wages are not going up. Technology is killing more jobs than it is creating at least on the media side.
Musical tastes seem harder and harder to predict. Can Taylor Swift be the only person in show business able to read the consumer? Sure seems that way sometimes.
Check out the videos or stills of her new Summer tour. That stage that goes up in the air and around like a propeller. She puts the show in show business.
The Tennessean did a story today that she has removed the "Country" songs from her show. Well that's been going on for a few years. She has a plan and the audience does not seem to be complaining.
Taylor knew when to change and Dave knew when to leave. Evolution is a difficult concept for most of us who do not relish change.
Waiting on a new boss ... watching your company evolve hurts and can create quite a few queasy stomachs ... those uneasy moments going on right now around Music Row and at other media outlets. Downsizing, rearranging, uncertainty trying to understand the market place ... It is frustrating.
I'm personally sad about Dave. I worry about him as a person. Watching Johnny Carson wilt away was horrible for his fans. I hope Dave finds a purpose other than just being rich and having free time. He is a very talented man with many creative ideas.
Each generation has its Larry Lujack, Don Imus, Dick Clark, Howard Stern ... Robert W Morgan ... Clive Davis ... Quincy Jones ... Jimmy Bowen ... Johnny Carson ... David Brinkley ... Chet Atkins ... Buddy Killen ... Frances Preston ... Minnie Pearl ... Roy Acuff ... I could go on.
They are just a few of the names that made radio, TV and the music business such dynamic media.
We badly need a Steve Jobs, Bill Gates-type to breathe fresh air into the system and evolve.
Dave Letterman's departure feels like a death. I hate that. Watching the workers haul the background set from the building 12 hours from the finale is sickening. We are such a fast food society! Again, moving on is hard to do ... But we do.
So many fresh faces on Music Row and some of them are very different. The key is to embrace change while celebrating the present and past. Mix it up... it shouldn't be "bro" vs. "icon" ... Choosing sides like a tag football team.
Someone real smart needs to learn how to mix the greatness of the Internet generation with the raw excitement of the '60s. Whoever gets that formula right will be such a huge winner. We are so ready for a new David Letterman ... a new Beatles ... a new George Strait ... just got to find the formula !
Fun seeing Brad Paisley get the opening slot for The Rolling Stones in Nashville. Great to see Carrie Underwood a few days away from getting back into the musical world. Rough Winter... pollen-filled Spring ... Time to recharge those batteries now that the Summer of 2015 is here ... Good Memorial weekend to you all..
