If you are in the Northeast ... I can't imagine!! Nashville has been for the most part off-duty this week ... Holiday weekend turned into a scene from " Frozen" ... and it's still going on...
Can't make any promises about CRS next week. Weather is always a wild card at CRS. NASCAR is in Atlanta next weekend on their new schedule and that may not work out well.
Lee Brice had a broken-down bus this week but that seems to be the worse thing that has happened. Twenty-two people on one tour bus might be stinky, but the show must go on. Booking shows in Winter come with risk but almost always a welcoming audience. Miranda in the sub-zero Illinois this weekend as Luke Bryan does Orlando and Jason Aldean plays Nashville's Bridgestone.
CRS is such a bright spot for so many who leave their normal jobs and come to Music City to party, listen to music and maybe learn something.
The music will be overflowing. All the baby acts are being buffed and waxed as we speak so they can be ready ... You can almost smell the new leather and makeup.
With corporate radio group think bigger than ever, not sure how the jobs get done from the radio folks to the music people, but efforts will be made. The folks who work for local owners will be having the best time. Most of the folks who used to come and work for the big chains are back home working. If they are working at all.
The new kids on the block will be wooed and loved and fed and watered and amazed. If it's your first, try to sleep a little so you don't go home and get sick. Which is frequently a problem when you destroy your immune system. Can't wait to see if someone does something that goes viral. Imagine in the past had there been smartphones in the lobby bar at the host hotel. Whoa...
All these baby artists trying to get a few slots on the shrinking playlists of stations trying to compete with streaming. I'm not sure how radio is ever going to compete, music to music, other than radio is free. But you have commercials. Music to music, without other content, seems to be mission impossible. Will it be too late for some radio Gods to study Howard Stern ... Rush Limbaugh ... Paul Harvey ... Howard Cosell and others who got people to come to their format ... their show and forsake more music radio? Benchmarks will save the day or will at least help stop the bleeding. Contests, too ... You can't win a concert ticket in a stream. News and traffic and stuff, radio did great until they allowed TV to take their place. And those folks aren't coming back!
TV morning shows are the profit center for local TV now. Audience -- all stolen from radio stations -- not doing their job giving vital morning needs at 5a, 6a ... even 4:30a. Radio gave away its franchise being cheap and not reacting to a changing world.
It is time to rebuild your radio station ... make it live ... interactive and something more than a jukebox playing average new music. Or put on your parachutes. Things are moving very fast. Apple is coming. And you should be scared ... very scared! They are rich and not armed with credit .., but CASH! Music will be theirs! Laugh at your own peril ... ready to risk your house that you are right?
Better talk about that at CRS this week. The last chance to fix your music radio station! How many times have you heard that? This time it may be accurate ... just ask around ... at high schools and college hangouts. Very exciting and challenging times for free broadcasters!
