Jimmy Carter in his homebase Nashville
I am a fan of Taylor Swift. I think she is brilliant in many, many ways! She is the fastest study I have seen in my 35 years in Nashville. She was a game changer like Garth was a game changer. Not every one wants the game changed. Ever!
Taylor went officially POP this week and she took off like a bullet. Ten times more spins than Katy Perry's song. Who can do what she does and do it with class like she does? Easy answer: No ONE! Sorry, but she is elegant and awkward at the same time. Smooth but real and every flavor in between. Too much sugar but it's so much better than the brand x Miley Cyrus.
This week some rapper dude accused her of racist tones in her new video. His name is not worth mentioning since he did this outrageous charge to get publicity. Okay, maybe he believes what he says but he is not worth even addressing. The point: Welcome to the puke-filled world of rap and pop ... popular music in 2014. In Country she was safe. Now in the open water, it is a different world.
Taylor is the biggest pop star in the world. She lives in New York City and hangs with Hollywood friends. She has grown up and left home. Like others who go away to express independence, she may well get enough of this at some point and come back home. Nashville is normal ... as normal as you can find in a creative community. She will be welcomed back whenever she wishes to come back. The haters are always going to hate! Just shake it off, TS!
Some Country stations did try to get away with playing her. Who knows in 2014, but I don't think even in these times that will play. Can't hurt to try. Sales at one point would have looked pretty bad without her ... now maybe not so much. It will be fine, Music Row bean counters.
Look at the veteran artists getting love from airplay and the labels the last few days ... Garth and his sales machine ... whoa ... Trisha Yearwood getting a deal at Sony, too. That sure is interesting. Look at Tim and Faith on top of the charts ... His 50th Top 10 hit. It's deja vu all over again.
Taylor reliving 1989 and the 1989 artists of country toping the sales, concert and label news. In the era of so many new acts, the veteran play of later Summer of 2014 is interesting,.
Summer of 2014 on the charts has been wild. Dierks making it two weeks in a row that he worked so hard to make successful. His documentary, the fresh tour. Hard work paid off ... and couldn't happen to a more deserving artist!
Oh yeah ... 40,000 showing up and it could have been 100,000 if they wanted to see Kenny Chesney. Impressive and maybe a beginning or an annual event for the Flora-Bama near Orange Beach, AB. They are having meetings to make things even smoother ... One arrest. Try that in the Rust Belt where it has been nothing short of chaos this Summer. Two dead ... two raped ... hundreds arrested ... a real proud Summer at the concert venue!
New Paisley CD this coming week ... Moonshine in the Trunk. There are singers and pickers and then artists like Brad. Not predictable. Colorful, talented and the freshest artist in the format. Consistent and COUNTRY! Opry member, underrated recording artist. He should be an even bigger star than he is. The man has his family first ... then this business. Able to represent this format on any stage at any time with the right message and tone. Go listen to the WHOLE CD, not just the cuts. It is a total work as have been his other albums. In the great tradition of the Beatles, he presents a project with a beginning, a middle and an end. Listen to it in order and uninterrupted. It is a work of art and commerce.
What a way to roll into Fall ... Hoo rah ... hold the ice buckets, please!
