Get the slots, dice and cards ready ... the hillbilly high rollers are on the way to Vegas! It's Academy of Country Music's big week with the big show, three hours on CBS Sunday April 6th.
CBS is still mad about losing the CMAs. Yes they are! So they are making a network-wide PR push to get people to watch the show. From the Price Is Right's prize packages to Brad Paisley on the Robin Williams sitcom. The talk shows of CBS, for sure, and anywhere else they can with a lot of promos on their own air.
Country can always use a big infomercial and this rite of Spring doesn't have big competition. The basketball playoffs are on CBS too.
Who will be helped? Labels pray for the new kids on the block. That is their obsession after all. The network is smart enough to not let that idea go too crazy. New does not equal big ratings. You need a good mix. Luke Bryan is getting a huge push already in just the promos. Remember fellow co-host Blake is on NBC three to five hours a week, not counting promos. Luke is not as well known to a national audience outside Country. He's getting there. This year he should feel more at home in the process, too.
If George Strait wins the big prize and that those wheels seem to be rolling in place, that will be interesting. Luke is hot and Fla-Ga Line needs a big award show night. Miranda seems to have that world locked down. Where will Taylor and Carrie fit into all this? Brett Elderge come out ahead in the new folks ... we will wait and see.
DIVORCE ... what a scary word ... and one all too frequently in the headlines. It returned this week as Trace Adkins loses his 17-year marriage. Two good people I like a lot. Being gone all the time does not help a marriage. Fighting other personal problems is complicated by the pressures of the entertainment business. I hope both come out of this okay. The list is longer than your arm of those who tired and failed in this complicated union.
When you see a star jetting home after a show, that's an investment in his marriage as much as anything.
What is the deal with the Classic Rock folks going on forever? What happened to the love we gave the Classic Country artists? From Elton to Billy Joel to The Doobies and Fleetwood Mac, the aging rockers are treated like royalty. I'm totally fine about that. Save some love for the folks who built the Country music business in the '70s and '80s and '90s. No names necessary ... you know who they are. Support them like you do the rock dinosaurs.
Should the fans vote for the ACM Entertainer of the Year and New Artist? Yes, if it's a fair vote ... the mix of members with fans seems odd. It's really not that important.
This isn't an election in Crimea after all. May the best star win ... hoo rah ...
Spring is still not here FYI 19-degree wind chill in Nashville this week. Yuk. Vegas get ready ... golf ... the pool ...the lights of the big city ...What goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas ... maybe ...
