Many on-air personalities use a variety of sources to find show topics. Social media, real life, and show prep services are three off the top of my head. Here’s how I’d rank them:
1.Real life
2.Social Media
3.Show prep serviceThere’s not much that can perform better than a relevant topic and story from your own life. The level of depth and connection is powerful when done well. I coach several people who are masters at taking an Instagram post and turning it into an amazing connection point up a song intro. There are some great conversation starters found on show prep services. To avoid repeating the same topic that every show on every radio station is doing make sure you share your unique point of view. Be relevant and unique.
HERE’S THE TAKEAWAY
When your day gets unexpectedly busy or if you have a co-host out sick or on vacation, it’s very tempting to simply rip and read from something you’ve found. If that ever happens make sure 1. You share your POV to make it a unique, non-duplicable break, and 2. Know the story well enough to SHARE it with the listener …not READ it to them.
