Oct 23, 2018
XXXTENACION, also formerly known as Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, has been a controversial rapper that integrated many elements of punk rock, hip-hop, R&B and heavy metal. He is a South Florida native but had trouble in his childhood that caused him to stay with various relatives. Though, he was sent to juvenile detention after committing an armed robbery, he decided to get cleaned up with friend and collaborator Ski Musk the Slump God. Once he was released, Onfroy and Ski Mask decided to pursue a career in music and create an only Florida rap crew members club.
In 2014, was a big year for Onfroy when he uploaded his first track to SoundCloud, “Vice City” that gained hundreds of thousands of streams. But it didn’t slow down for him, he released two EPs, “The Fall and Ice Hotel” which quickly earned a cult following with his releases. Then in 2015, he released two collaborative albums “Members Only, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2” that included Slump God and associates from his members only club. For his third and fourth EP, “It wasn’t Enough” and “Willy Wonka Was a Child Murderer,” were also collaborative.
Even though, “Bad Vibes” was intended to be a mixtape to be released in 2016, it became a full-length album. His single “Look at Me!” was released in 2016 but didn’t reach Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart until the re-released was made in 2017.
During his prison sentence in 2017, he had signed a deal with Empire Distribution, which was the label that released “Revenge,” an eight-song mixtape. The mixtape broke into the Top 50 of the Billboard 200 and reached to 21 on the R&B/ hip-hop chart. After months, Onfroy’s studio album came out on Bad Vibes Forever/Empire. When he released his album “17,” the singles “Revenge” and “Jocelyn Flores,” which was about his friend who had committed suicide. Once “17,” was released it peaked to Billboard 200 and R&B/hiphop chart. But on June 18, 2018, sad news broke about Onfroy was shot and killed in Miami.
