Calexico
Apr 19, 2015
If there is one thing you can say about the Tucson-based musical collective known as Calexico, it's that they never stay in one musical place for very long. Sure, there are certain sonic signatures that identify the band's unique style, but with each effort the band has emphasized some more than others.
With their latest effort, Edge Of The Sun, key members Joey Burns (vocals, guitar) and John Convertino (drums, percussion) (along with their current band ) get back to their Southwestern roots and enlist the help of several musical friends including Niko Case, Sam Beam, Nick Urata, Gaby Moreno, Pieta Brown, Carla Morrison and Amparo Sanchez.
The whole album is a wonderful listen, but some of the tracks that stand out on Edge Of The Sun include "Falling From The Sky," "Bullets & Rocks," "Tapping On The Line," "Miles From The Sea" and "Beneath The City Of Dreams.
"When I step back from this record I see the spirit of collaboration," says Burns. "As we began working on it, we started inviting people and it was a natural thing. We've always welcomed guests; it's in our DNA. John and I are really good at hopping in to play with people and improvise but we're also sensitive to what artists need."
