Damien Rice
Nov 23, 2014
Born in County Kildare, near Dublin, Damien Rice grew up as a typical Irish lad, but in his teens music began to play an important role in his life. After a stint as an alt-rocker, Rice released two solo albums - O and 9 - to much success both in Ireland and abroad. But then Rice went into the shadows for several years participating only in some collaborative projects and offering musical contributions to charitable projects such as the Songs for Tibet, Freedom Campaign and the Enough Project.
Now, he returns with a new album, My Favourite Faded Fantasy. The project was produced by Rick Rubin and we find Rice once again willing to bear his soul, offering an unguarded and intimate look into his emotions and deepest thoughts.
All eight songs on My Faded Favourite Fantasy are incredibly powerful including, "I Don't Want To Change You," "It Takes A Lot To Know A Man," The Box" and the title track.
In a recent interview in Esquire, Rice said of his time away from recording, "I was waiting until it felt right. I wanted to get back to falling in love with my guitar again, and hanging out with my guitar like I would a friend. I took a year off, and I thought that would do. But a year turned into two, and then three, so it just kept going. If I was to pin it down to something specific, I'd say that up until about three years ago, the songs I was writing still had lyrics or sentiments that didn't match what I was feeling. It was old, negative energy coming out of me still, but it needed to all get out so I could trash those songs and put them in the bin. And then I was able to let the new songs out."
Damien Rice recently performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman." He has plans to tour North America in the spring of 2015.
