Serena Ryder
Sep 2, 2013
Music has been a primary part of Serena Ryder's life all along. Her father performed as a musician and her mother sang backup vocals, and they encouraged their daughter to pursue her dreams when it came to music. As Ryder explained, "I'd been writing a lot since I was 11 years old. I wasn't doing diary entries; I needed to express something a little deeper. When I got my guitar a whole other world opened up to me. I realized I could put the poetry I was writing to song and bring two very separate things together."
Ryder released her first indie recording at age 15, and it wasn't long before the word about her talent spread throughout Canada. Soon the press came onboard and finally Atlantic signed her for the U.S. Initially releasing an EP called "Told You in Whispered Song" helped spread the word in this country and set things up for the release of "Is It OK."
This year she released Harmony via Capitol in the States. The project was produced by Jerrod Bettis and Jon Levine. Amazingly, Ryder had written 60 songs for the album - and then decided to throw them all out. It allowed her a fresh start.
"Stompa" has already proven to be a hit in Canada and the U.S., with her next single, "What I Wouldn't Do," already certified Gold up north. Other key tracks off Harmony include "Baby Come Back," "Call Me" and "For You."
"All elements came together in this record," Ryder said of the project. "That's why it's called Harmony. Harmony is being able to have a billion things happen at once. As long as they're in harmony, it's all good."
Earlier this year, Ryder nabbed her fourth Juno Award as well as a MuchMusic Award for Rock/Alternative Video of the Year 2013. In addition to Triple A radio's support, she is also receiving significant support in the U.S. from VH1 for the new album.
