Willy Mason
Aug 18, 2013
Willy Mason is an American singer-songwriter. He is the son of Jemima James and Michael Mason, who are both folk singers. Raised on Martha's Vineyard, he eventually moved to New York to pursue his musical career.
Mason's popularity rose after musician Conor Oberst discovered his music backstage at a Bright Eyes show. Oberst would soon sign Mason to his new record label, Team Love, and release his debut LP, Where the Humans Eat, in 2004. In 2007, he returned with If The Oceans Get Rough on Astralwerks. He now returns with Carry On via the Communion label. In the U.S Mason has a loyal following but it is in the U.K. where he enjoys a tremendous amount of respect and admiration.
Carry On was recorded in south London with producer Dan Carey (MIA, Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand) and marks a departure for the artist. At the core are his basic, down-to-earth songs but the new project sports some interesting instrumentation and arrangements. Focus tracks include "Talk Me Down," "What Is This," "Restless Fugitive," "Into Tomorrow" and "Shadows In The Dark."
"The album is about growing up and trying to find one's place," Mason said. "I think of this record as the third and final chapter to a particular narrative that started with 'Where the Humans Eat'."
After a three-year hiatus from touring, Mason is back out on the road again with Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Laura Marling.
