Alejandro Escovedo
May 28, 2012
Alejandro Escovedo, one of Americana's favorite sons, returned to the recording scene -- to everyone's great relief after a serious bout with Hepatitis C that threatened to take him to an early grave -- with 2006's "The Boxing Mirror." Needless to say, he had a whole new pool of experience to draw from once he was back on his feet and the songs were some of his best.
He then took a broader look at his life in 2008 with the Tony Visconti-produced "Real Animal." In 2010 he returned with "Streets Songs of Love," where Escovedo once again collaborated with producer Visconti plus chief songwriting partner Chuck Prophet.
Escovedo has now released his 11th solo album, Big Station, again working with Visconti and Prophet. Escovedo finds inspiration in his own life's story for the songs on this album as he fights to keep faith in a changing world and to hold onto love. The result is an engaging and passionate collection of songs referencing the world as it is today.
"Man of the World" gets it all started but other tracks worth your attention include "Sally was a Cop," "Bottom of the World," "San Antonio Rain," "Can't Make Me Run," "Never Stood A Chance" and the title track.
In an interview with Slate, Escovedo said, "Chuck Prophet and I wanted [this album] to be an outward look into what is happening in the world around us."
Escovedo took SXSW by storm with a slew of stellar performances including two appearances with Bruce Springsteen. He is taping a segment for "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in June. Escovedo is currently in tour in North America and then he heads to Europe and the U.K.
