Kathleen Edwards
Aug 17, 2020
By 2014, singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards had released four studio albums. But not long after she abruptly put her guitar away -- at least for a while – and she moved back to her hometown of Ottawa, settled down in the nearby village of Stittsville and opened a coffeeshop called Quitters.
However, in 2018, she received an unexpected phone call that changed that. Maren Morris, a longtime fan, invited her to Nashville for a songwriting session. Edwards accepted, and “Good Woman,” their collaboration, wound up on
Morris’ 2019 album, GIRL. It was at that time she met Ian Fitchuk, with whom she would record her return project – along with longtime collaborator/guitarist Jim Bryson -- Total Freedom.
In addition to “Options Open,” check out “Glenfern” “Hard On Everyone,” “Simple Math” and “Feelings Fade.”
Of her time away from music, Edwards said, “I had no desire to write, no desire to play. It allowed me all the time and space I needed to even just enjoy listening to music again. Opening a cafe gave me such a clean break from the weight of what I was carrying. I have this whole other experience now that grounded me and helped me rebuild my relationship with myself, and writing music. I’m entirely in control and deciding what my course of action is.”
Kathleen Edwards was recently featured in The New Yorker, NPR Weekend Edition, NYTimes, Acoustic Café, NPR World Café and on CBS Saturday Morning. She just did a virtual record release party and performance.
