We all know Ed O’Brien as the artful guitarist for Radiohead. And until 2012 he was content at being just that. But when he took his family to Brazil that year for an extended stay, O’Brien began to realize it was perhaps time to do a solo project.
Well, eight years later we have Earth. The project features O’Brien with the production team of Flood, Catherine Marks, Alan Moulder and Adam ‘Cecil’ Bartlett as well as bassist Nathan East, drummers Omar Hakim and Glenn Kotche, and The Invisible’s multi-instrumentalist leader David Okumu. Portishead’s Adrian Utley also appears on two tracks, “Shangri-La” and “Sail On,” and Laura Marling duets with O’Brien on “Cloak of The Night.” Other keeper tracks include “Deep Days” and “Banksters.”
Shortly before the runup to the release of Earth, O’Brien contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19) but has since recovered. He told NME recently he considers Earth a fitting soundtrack for these trying times: “A theme on the record is that in spite of the darkness and challenging times that we live in, humanity can do amazing things when they put their mind to it.”
O’Brien has some tentative touring date beginning at the end of May in North America, including The Newport Folk Festival and the Ohana Music Festival.
