Waxahatchee
Apr 8, 2020
The concept of Waxahatchee – named after a creek near where she grew up in Alabama – was formed in 2010 by-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. Originally an acoustic solo project, her recordings have evolved to include a backing band. St. Cloud is Crutchfield’s fifth album under the moniker of Waxahatchee.
Crutchfield’s southern roots are undeniable and, perhaps, are even a bit amplified due to her writing a 20th anniversary essay on Lucinda Williams’ 1998 classic album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. The album’s songs were written shortly after she decided to get sober, and that experience is heavily referenced in the lyrics of the songs on St. Cloud. In addition to the lead track, “Lilacs,” check out “Arkadelphia,” “Witches,” “Can’t Do Much” and “Fire.”
Crutchfield recently told The Guardian, “I feel like I keep chipping away at this authentic thing that’s down there somewhere. Slowly but surely, I’m getting closer to it.”
There are tentative plans for an extensive tour starting in late summer including the Pitchfork Music Festival, the Newport Folk Festival and headlining dates on through October.
