Ed Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England in 1991. As a young boy he sang in the local church choir, and learned to play guitar. He began writing songs while in high school.
He began recording music in 2004, self-releasing a number of EPs and posting songs on YouTube. A 2011 EP, No. 5 Collaborations Project, released in January, reached #2 on the iTunes chart, drawing the attention of record labels. He was signed in the UK that month by Asylum Records. By April, his debut single "The A Team" was released. It served as the lead track from his debut studio album, +, which was released in September that year. It reached Top 5 in the U.S., while the song became a Top 20 hit and earned a nomination for Song Of The Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards. In 2014, he was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy.
Sheeran's second album, x, was released in 2014, reaching #1 on the Top 200. It contained several hits, including the 3x Platinum single "Thinking Out Loud".
He followed with his third studio album,÷, in March 2017. No.6 Collaborations Project arrived as his fourth studio album in July 2019, featuring appearances from Justin Bieber, Camila Cabello, Travis Scott, Eminem and others. His most recent album, =, arrived in October, preceded by the singles "Bad Habits" and "Shivers". "Overpass Graffiti" was released alongside the album as the third single. The album debuted at #1, Sheeran's fourth to do so in the United States.
Sheeran is married to childhood friend and former classmate Cherry Seaborn. She is the inspiration for the 2017 song "Perfect". Their daughter Lyra was born in August 2020. (Photo Credit: Noam Galai)
