Tegan And Sara
Feb 24, 2013
The danceable electro-pop duo, Tegan & Sara released their 7th studio album, Heartthrob, on January 29th. It is an incredibly bouncy collection of lush, up-to-the-minute indie synth-pop and blown-out radio choruses. Producer Greg Kurstin, (Ke$ha & Kelly Clarkson) must be credited for this dance-floor churn. Tegan & Sara are able to draw you as close as ever with their bittersweet silk-over-sass harmonies on this album. Heartthrob debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 49,000 copies in its first week and securing the band's highest chart position to date. The first single, "Closer", was released on September 25th 2012, and has reached #6 on the MuchMusic Top 30 countdown. It is also Tegan and Sara's first single to be certified Gold in Canada.
Formed in 1995, these twin sisters from Calgary, Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin both the guitar, keyboards and write all their own music. In 1998, they won Calgary's Garage Warz competition, using the studio time they won to record their first professional demo, Yellow tape, which was followed by Orange tape and Red tape. Two songs from Red tape appeared on their first album, Under Feet Like Ours, which they released independently in 1999 under the name "Sara and Tegan". Neil Young's manager signed them to Young's Vapor Records label, and they released This Business of Art through Vapor in 2000. Then in 2002, Tegan & Sara released their third album If It Was You. Their fourth album, So Jealous, was released in 2004 and led to wider success. Their 2007 album, The Con, was released by Vapor and it was co-produced by Chris Walla. In 2009, they released their sixth album Sainthood and it debuted on the Billboard top 200 albums at number 21 selling, 24,000 copies in its first week.
Heartthrob sinks the indie guitars lower in the mix and dials up big, shimmering synths. Dealing frankly with love, rejection, frustration, self-doubt and self-acceptance, almost every one of the 10 tracks is catchy and distinctive enough to become a hit. It blasts straight into action with lead single, Closer, about the thrills and promises of new romance, its: "All I dream of lately, is how to get you underneath me," balanced by: "I'm the type who won't get oh so critical ... I won't treat you like you're oh so typical." Elsewhere the girls address their position as role models to other gay women: "I'm not their hero, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't brave/ I never walked the party line, but that doesn't mean that I was never afraid."
Tegan And Sara have begun their North American tour in support of the new album.
