Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Sep 24, 2012
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is a rock band hailing from Vermont. Formed in 2002, they began their career as an indie band, self-producing their albums and touring extensively in the jam bands and music festivals circuit, playing as many as 200 gigs in a year. In 2005 they signed with Hollywood Records and with them, they have published four studio albums, encompassing rock subgenres such as blues rock, folk rock, hard rock, and alternative rock. Their third, self-titled album (2010) has been a major commercial success, topping iTunes charts and receiving international attention.
Their fourth studio album, The Lion The Beast The Beat, was released on June 12th and promises to be their most eclectic project yet, drawing on influences that range from 60's R&B to 70's rock to contemporary country. Standout tracks on the album include "Star", "The Divide", "Parachute Heart", "Never Go Back", and the title track. "This album is really a different animal than our previous records -- no pun intended," says Grace. "(It) plays on the duality of human nature -- the fact that we all have our demons, and we all have the ability to be good." The band's appeal and public image is largely due to lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Grace Potter (born 20 June 1983), who is well known for her vocal qualities (sometimes compared to rock and blues cult singers like Janis Joplin or Koko Taylor) as well as for her vibrant energy on stage. A deluxe version of The Lion The Beast The Beat features an alternate version of "Stars" as a duet with Kenny Chesney, along with a Willie Nelson collaboration on the band's 2005 hit, "Ragged Company." The album has debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #17 and #10 on Billboard's Digital Album chart.
