Phillips was born in Albany, Georgia. His appreciation for music began in his teens, when he formed a band with his brother-in-law and began performing locally. While a student at Albany Tech, he auditioned for American Idol, competing in the program's 11th season. During the competition, he had to undergo several surgeries to remove kidney stones, yet he finished the competition, coming in first place.
His Idol single, "Home", was featured on his Debut album, The World From The Side Of The Moon, along with the follow up "Gone, Gone, Gone". His next album, Behind The Light, arrived in 2014. He signed with Interscope Records and returned with the album, Collateral, in 2018, Scoring a Top 20 single with the song "Miles".
His newest song is the self-released, "Dancing With Your Shadows", written with Quinn Lewis and Todd Clark. During an Instagram session with fans, he said "I absolutely love this new song. It’s an emotional one. It’s uptempo, but the lyrics are meaningful and the energy is there."
