Panama
Apr 27, 2014
On February 25th, the Australian band, Panama, released their sophomore EP, Always via 300/Future Classic. This electronically driven album contains 7 songs. The anthemic title track, "Always" was recorded in San Francisco and produced by Eric Broucek (!!!, Classixx, Holy Ghost!, Hercules & Love Affair). Sing-along worthy and summery, "Always" starts the release off with piano-heavy pop that doesn't over-think itself.
The group is fronted by Perth-born songwriter and classically-trained pianist, Jarrah McCleary who also has lead vocals and plays guitar. Other members of the band include Tom Marland on piano and guitar, and Tim Commandeur on drums.
McCleary grew up in the bush land of Australia's Northern Territory. When he moved to Perth, known as the most isolated city in the world on the southwestern tip of Australia, it led to a surge of creativity. Several years since he landed in Perth and started an Elton John-style piano band, McCleary's newest gig of white boy funk music steeped in stripped back synth and low-fi vocals is sweeping through the southern hemisphere. Panama's debut EP, It's Not Over, was released in 2012. This EP's highlights were "It's Not Over" and "Magic."
