Nico Vega
Mar 2, 2014
The new Nico Vega single "I Believe (Get Over Yourself)," is out now and it is featured on the band's upcoming album Lead To Light, due June 10th via Five Seven Music and was co-written by Dan Reynolds of Grammy Award Winners Imagine Dragons. As well as this new album on the horizon, Nico Vega's front woman, Aja Volkman contributed her vocals to the new Glitch Mob Record, Love Death Immortality.
The Los Angeles-based band consists of singer/lyricist Aja Volkman, guitarist Rich Koehler and drummer Dan Epand. The band originally formed in 2005 when Rich and Mike Peña, Nico Vega's original drummer who left the band in 2007 and whose mother inspired the band's name, saw Aja perform at LA's Universal Bar & Grill. They self-released a handful of EPs shortly afterwards, organically growing their fan base and attracting the attention of Myspace Music, which released Nico Vega's self-titled debut full-length album in 2009.
In 2013, they released their sophomore album entitled We Are The Art. It drew from intensely personal experiences and the band's passion for art and politics to deliver some of the most poignant tunes in recent memory. They have had songs synced in advertisements for Jack Reacher, Vampire Academy, Ketel One, and BioShock Infinite. A&E Networks chose the band to exclusively record the theme song for Bonnie & Clyde miniseries; a cover of Cher's "Bang Bang," which is featured on the upcoming record. While the band and its members have evolved and matured as people and musicians, Aja says that there's one thing that will never change.
"Nico Vega's running theme will always be standing up for who you are in the world and having the confidence to shine," she says.
And shine they do, 2014 is already off to a great start with the band currently on the road as support on the Imagine Dragons tour. More shows will be added to the tour line up as the album due date approaches. Entertainment Weekly put it perfectly: "It's a good year to be Nico Vega."
