Man Man
Aug 4, 2013
It's been 10 years since Philadelphia band, Man Man, first started pulling together their unique blend of art pop, experimental rock, funk, soul, cabaret, and vintage pop. They are now getting ready to release their fifth full-length album, which will actually be their third for their current label, Anti-. The album, On Oni Pond, will be released on September 10th. "Head On," is the first single from this upcoming album and on it, front-man, Honus Honus makes the most out of his wealth of experience, transmuting it into wisdom and empathy.
He explains, "This is a strange and beautiful record but it's also head on and fearless. It's not a record that's going to flirt with you, this is a record that's asking you out. If you get into bed with us there's going to be a relationship."
Man Man released their debut album, The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face in 2004 on Ace Fu Records, but they did not begin to tour extensively until their follow-up album, Six Demon Bag, released in 2006. Man Man released their third studio album Rabbit Habits on Anti- in 2008 and embarked on a North American tour in March 2008. The band released their fourth album Life Fantastic in 2011 with producer Mike Mogis. On this album, they chose to abandon their previous "wacky" sound, in favor of a more somber sound.
Their multi-instrumental style is centered on the piano playing of lead singer and lyricist Honus Honus. On recordings, Honus usually plays piano but during the live shows he uses a Rhodes Piano or a Nord Electro 3. He is accompanied by an energetic group of musicians and vocalists. Instruments played by the band include a clavinet, Moog Little Phatty, sousaphone, saxophone, trumpet and many others.
