“Miss You” is the latest single from the L.A.-based sextet, Paper Jackets. “Miss You” can be found on their recently released album, “Souvenirs,” out now via Selma. Paper Jackets has added a new member, Aimee Proal, on backing vocals and to collaborate in writing sessions. “She has added a much different spin on the music, and a fresh energy to our performances” said lead singer Mason. “She is now so important to the band."
The album’s “scrapbook” feel inspired each song. “Miss You” was born during the band’s trip to Brooklyn, New York They happened to find a xylophone in their AirBnb and the subsequent jam session led to the saccharine hook of “miss you!” throughout the song.
"Miles had this riff he was playing in the living room when we were playing around with the AirBnb's xylophone," Aimie writes in a joint email interview with Mason for this article that accompanies the "Miss You" video. "We just started singing over this riff. James had some melodies going for the hook, and I had some lyrics in my notes app that felt like a good fit. We started yelling out, 'I miss you!' and thought there was something just really fun and special about it, so we continued to work on the song when we got back to L.A. over the course of a few months."
On the new album, lead singer Mason noted, "Each song talks about these relics from our past that tell a story about how we got here.” The album art features many 'relics,' from a disco ball to a pink flamingo. Each of those is telling a story from a specific song. Things from your past, a scrapbook mentality. It's very nostalgic.”
Paper Jackets was formed in 2016 as each musician was rotating through a number of Sunset Strip jam nights. What started as a few random meetings and sessions has since blossomed into a six-piece group consisting of Mason, Emily Dickinson (keyboard, live backing vocals), Jonny Vesely (guitar), Miles Franco (bass, live backing vocals), David Allen (drums) and Aimee Proal (vocals). After releasing the EP “Don’t Lose Your Head” in 2018, they grabbed opening slots for Bishop Briggs and the X Ambassadors, and haven’t slowed down since.
