Today (5/1), the Seattle-based band Car Seat Headrest released their 12th studio album entitled “Making A Door Less Open” via Matador/Beggars Group. This collection marks a stylistic shift from previous material. Car Seat Headrest front-man Will Toledo explained the album contains elements of "EDM, hip hop, futurism, doo-wop, soul, and of course rock and roll." “Making a Door Less Open” is a quasi-collaboration between Car Seat Headrest and 1 Trait Danger, Toledo’s electronic music side project where he records under the moniker Trait. Three songs were put out ahead of the album release including, “Martin.” “There Must Be More Than Blood,” followed by the single “Hollywood” on April 16th, which has picked up quick momentum at Alternative Radio.
When asked about “Hollywood,“ Toledo said, “This song is about Hollywood as a place where people go to make their fantasies come to life, and they end up exploiting other people and doing terrible things to maintain their fantasy. There’s this terror you’re going to lose the fantasy, and you’re going to have to face the facts, and some people will do anything to avoid facing that. It’s about that fear and the pain of being subjugated to someone else’s fantasy against your will, and it’s all tied together under this banner of this physical location of Hollywood that we all know about and dream about, but none of us really want to think about what is going on behind the scenes there.”
Car Seat Headrest was formed in Leesburg, VA in 2010. They are currently located in Seattle. The band’s lineup is made up of Will Toledo (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizers), Ethan Ives (guitar, bass, backing vocals), Seth Dalby (bass) and Andrew Katz (drums, percussion).
